IRELAND’S biggest Halloween Parade took place on Saturday with a spooktacular fireworks display.
Marlay Park and House in Rathfarnham, Co Dublin was transformed into a fright fest of spooky thrills and chills for Samhain 2008 hosted by DLR Events.
The event featured an afternoon of children’s monster movies followed by a fancy dress parade through Marlay Park finishing up with a magnificent fireworks display.Despite the weather, thousands made their way to Marlay for the Halloween Parade, led by a brass band and creepy special guest characters. The parade continued through the park to a woodland walkway lit by festoons and returned back through the park to finish at Marlay Park House with a samba band and dancers bringing up the rear.
Children of all ages watched the fireworks and took part in the festivities with ghosts, ghouls and games galore. The observance of Halloween, which dates from the dark ages, has long been associated with thoughts of witches, ghosts, devils and hobgoblins.
Today, many of the young and “young-at-heart” take a more light-hearted approach and the colourful festival has become family-oriented celebration.
Samhain is an initiative by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.  DLR Events hosts a fantastic series of free family entertainment and events in the county throughout the year.  Details of all events are on http://www.dlrevents.ie
